Tacoma Rail is one of three operating divisions of Tacoma Public Utilities, along with Tacoma Power and Tacoma Water. We are a publicly owned freight railroad that connects businesses and the Port of Tacoma to the North American rail network.

Public ownership and funding
The Public Utility Board oversees Tacoma Rail. The Tacoma City Council chooses the five unpaid board members.
Tacoma Rail pays for its work with money earned from freight service. We do not receive taxpayer funding. Tacoma Rail also pays 8% of its gross earnings to the City of Tacoma’s General Fund and 1.5% to the state of Washington.

Our service and workforce
More than 100 employees provide service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our employees inspect and maintain tracks and locomotives, help customers and support daily operations.
